Rob Lowe featured at the Cheyenne Artists Guild

Rob has always been around some sort of craft or art as long as he can remember. He took as many art classes as he could during his schooling and ended up receiving a fine arts degree from LCCC. After school Rob joined the Navy and then spent several years working alongside his father as a carpenter.

Arthritis in Rob's back has forced him to slow down physically but has intensified his art time and talents. He has been experimenting in several mediums and recently been enjoying pastels and a looser feel to his work. Please stop by the guild on Dec 8th from 5 till 8 to meet Rob and see his current work.

We are featuring a show of portraits by Cheyenne artist Paula Egan-Wright called Children of Haiti. These wistful and winsome portraits are being sold as a fundraiser for the new Kay Lesli school for orphans in Haiti. Clay Paper Scissors is donating part of the commission on every piece sold from this show to the project. Additionally, we will be offering some items by local artists that will make great gifts for yourself or someone on your list! Connie Norman is a well known and respected ceramic artist in the region and beyond. She has been published in several periodicals and has received numerous honors and awards. The show opens on Dec 8th from 5:00 till 8:00 during Art Design & Dine. Garrett's studio/office is located on the corner of Capitol and 17th. The show will be on display through December.

"All my life I have struggled with writing, now my work is completely covered in text. This paradigm shift has allowed me to experiment in different art forms, and face fears through the medium of art. An interesting adventure in self-discovery! The text in my pieces acts on several levels. For instance, it has texture, pattern, mystery and a path to look inward to decipher a glimpse into my private thoughts.
I am fascinated by the rhythmic qualities created by color, texture, and patterns. Decoration and the act of decorating are essential because it celebrates and enhances form and speaks purely of aesthetics. I use pottery as a vehicle to explore decoration and other formal questions. It allows me to investigate form, space and image. My greatest satisfaction comes from thoroughly filling surfaces with color and finely detailed decoration in a spirit that I feel is playful and whimsical. My attempt is to make the environment an expressive participant and to address the importance of aesthetics in our daily lives."

She is an accomplished fiber artist who has been featured on the HGTV That's Clever Series. After retiring from a rewarding career in elementary education, Gwen feels fortunate to pursue her dream of becoming a full time studio artist. Gwen loved her years of teaching and was constantly integrating art into projects with her young learners.
She has dabbled in stained glass, pastels, weaving and water color. Now she has found her niche with brightly colored fabric and paper collages. She has finished over 400 quilts for others, including many charity efforts for the community.

Kumihimo Braiding at Prairie Wind Nov 10th

Silk Kumihimo Braids

November will feature Phil Lack and Nita Macey at Prairie Wind. Phil's Kumihimo braids made out of her own hand dyed cords will be combined with Nita's beautiful lamp work beads for a unique custom look. Kumihimo braids are an offshoot of the traditional braids that were once used to tie the sections of Samurai armor together! After they went out of fashion, the braids were used for decoration. Phil uses a small foam disk with notches in it to weave her beautiful braids. By manipulating the cords through the slots in a patterned order, the braid is formed. By changing the order of the threads/cords, different patterns can be made. Beads can be added to any of the cords to create elaborate jewelry. Don't miss these two talented artist creating works of art at Prairie Wind!

You wont want to miss the work of self taught artist, Nick Dudash at November's Art Design & Dine! Born in 1932 on a farm in western Michigan, he attended a small country school and later graduated from Paw Paw High School. While attending high school, he found one of his interests to be in art, industrial drawing and drafting. Prior to serving four years in the United States Air Force he attended Western Michigan University and worked at the Indiana Steel Mills. While serving in the Air Force, he was assigned to a technical illustrator's group where he developed his skills in illustrating books for the military. After his honorable discharge, he made Cheyenne his home where he enjoys painting many of the colorful and beautiful western vistas that appear in many of his paintings.

The guild will also be hosting harpist, Michael Riversong. As a musician, Micael actively performing on Celtic Harp, guitar, flutes, and other instruments. Over 30 albums of his original music have been recorded and released so far.

Mary says this about her art, "I started painting soon after my father died, about 20 years ago. He left me all of his art supplies, which were plentiful. At first I didn’t know what to do with all of it, but in going through it, I discovered how intriguing it was—water colors, oils, pastels, etc. It wasn’t long before I was dabbling away, and then taking workshops, and studying with Russ Hamilton in Fort Collins. Watercolor is my favorite medium, but lately I’ve been experimenting with collage, abstractions, spray paint—anything and everything, including cat fur and dryer lint. Not everything turns out beautifully, but it is all great fun"!

My preferred approach to photography is that of an artist as opposed to a photojournalist. If one is reporting an incident, it is necessary to stay true to what is seen in the viewfinder. This is a legitimate constraint on the photographer. I rather prefer the latitude afforded the artist to enhance an image so that the resulting is image is pleasing and communicates what I want to express.

Amy Rankl is a Wyoming native living and working in Cheyenne. She loves the blue skies and wide open vistas of this state. You will see this influence is many of her pieces. She first came across antique glass beads while working in a gallery after High School graduation. Her collecting glass beads and then the knowledge needed to make them has been her quest. Amy has been making glass beads using the lampworking technique for over six years. On the 13th of October, Amy will be at Prairie Winds to talk to you about the whys and hows of what she does. She will have her artwork at the story to admire and purchase from 5:00 till 8:00 that evening.

New York City: Rising from the Ashes- at Clay Paper Scissors

In honor of the 10th anniversary of 9/11, Clay Paper Scissors is delighted to present “New York City: Rising from the Ashes.” This exhibit features photographs by Cheyenne artist Karen Cotton taken four years after the attack on New York City’s Twin Towers. The mix of images combines the vibrant resiliency of New York with haunting images of ground zero, and memorials.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, Sept. 8, 5-8 p.m., as part of the monthly Art Design and Dine art walk in Cheyenne. A second reception will be held October 13, 5-8 PM. The exhibit continues through Oct. 23.

Clay Paper Scissors is located at 1506 Thomes Ave., Suite B, Cheyenne. The gallery is located in an historic warehouse off of 15th Street across from the rail yards. Open 1-5 p.m. on Saturdays or by appointment.

How to Succeed in Business Cast Performing at LightsOn!

Join us as we kick off September's ART DESIGN & DINE, Cheyenne's Monthly Art Tour at The Hynd's on September 8th with a live performance by the cast of Cheyenne Little Theatre's production of How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. This production opens Cheyenne Little Theatre's 82nd Season of continuous entertainment for all theatre enthusiasts throughout the region! Members of the 28 person cast will be on hand from 5:15pm to 6:00pm to perform musical selections from the show to give everyone a sneak preview of the show that will open on September 23rd. How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying. Originally presented on Broadway in 1961, starring Robert Morse as J. Pierrepont Finch, it won seven Tony Awards, the New York Drama Critic Circle Award and the 1962 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. It was successfully revived in 1995 starring Matthew Broderick and this past February a new revival with Daniel Radcliff (of Harry Potter Fame) and John Larroquette, opened on Broadway, has won Tony Award's and has been proclaimed a huge hit.

Several different activities and events are planned for LightsOn! at the Hynds. In one section there will be a figure drawing class with a costumed model from 5:00 til 8:00. The artists, model and art tour goers will be inspired by the beautiful sounds of the Celtic Harp played by Michael Riversong between 6:30 and 8:00.
Riversong's Bio

Michael has been working with research lines related to Nikola Tesla since 1984 in many capacities, including Master of Ceremonies for technical conferences. He is a computer and environmental consultant, and is known to many as a musician, actively performing on Celtic Harp, guitar, flutes, and other instruments. Over 30 albums of his original music have been recorded and released so far. He has written numerous articles on environmental techniques and advanced energy research in many publications. His first book, "Design Ecology" was published in 1996. He has been teaching in Cheyenne, Wyoming since 2001. He often goes on tour doing performances and classes. He has a BA degree in Chinese language from the University of Colorado and holds certification as an Environmental Building Inspector. In 2006 he founded Tesla Academy to make advanced research more accessible to students of all ages.

" I like to depict many of the traditional Western themes of wildlife, livestock and rodeo, with a twist in style and interpretation. Pat Cashin will be the featured artist at the The Link Gallery for the upcoming art tour on September 8th from 5:00 til 8:00pm.
Born in Huntington, Long Island, New York, she received her B.A. in art from Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York and her M.A. in fine arts from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. She studied painting with Henre Goetz at Fontainebleau School of Fine Arts, France as well as taking classes with Albert Mullens of the University of Michigan for two years. Her postgraduate work in printmaking and education, was at Miami University of Ohio.
The paintings of award-winning artist Pat Cashin have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States, including the Cincinnati Art Museum; the Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida; The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor; the Viridian Gallery in New York City; the Joan Hodgel Gallery in Sarasota, Florida and Brena Gallery in Denver Colorado. There will be two venues hosting musical performances at the August 11th art tour. First make your way to The Cheyenne Artists Guild at 1701 Morrie Ave (near Holiday Park) for a duet by Harpist David Shaul and Oboist Abby Rowswell.
The concert will have two sets. The first from 5:00 till 6:00 and the second from 7:00 till 8:00. Expect an engaging and diverse performance that blends the beauty of the harp and oboe.

Abby Rowswell recently graduated from Mercer University in Macon, GA with a Bachelor of Arts in Music and French. Her primary oboe teacher was Adrian Gnam. Most recently, she played with the Beijing International Chamber Orchestra while working in China. Music is one of her many passions, including knitting, cooking, and reading good books.

David Shaul is a Wyoming native who studied pedal harp with Suzanne McDonald. Over the years his range has expanded to include cross-strung, Celtic, Latin, and Asian harps. He has been principal harpist with symphony orchestras in Arizona and California. A virtuoso performer on both folk and pedal harp, Dave does concerts, workshops, and lectures on World harps, pan-Celtic, and Renaissance/Baroque harp music. Dave''''s harp styles range from Latin to European to Asian. With a Ph.D. in anthropological linguistics from Berkeley, he speaks two Native American languages.

Starting a 6:00 and continuing till 8:00 will be the fiddling fingers of Phil N' The Blanks at Deslems Fine Arts at 300 East 17th Street.

Phil'N the Blanks is a family band from Cheyenne Wyoming. Julee and Dave Kramer (Mom and Dad) have been performing together since high school so when little Phil started fiddling in the 4th grade it was only a short time before he was begging to go gigging too. Since 2005 Phil & the Blanks have performed a mix of bluegrass, Celtic, swing and gospel music in a variety of venues throughout Colorado and Wyoming.

We'll have fun celebrating the best of the worst - create the most eye-searing and tacky art possible to win prizes! We'll provide the supplies, you provide the creativity (or not!)

If you want to create good sidewalk art, call the library (634-3561) and sign up for the Sidewalk Art Celebration on Saturday, August 6, at 10am. Everyone is welcome to participate! Wheatland Furniture Maker, Mark Koons to be August feature at Glen Garrett's

There isn't a substantial tree within sight of Mark Koon's shop, which is no surprise since he lives in a desert. Yet, his lumber rack is overflowing. Everywhere one looks, there are slabs, flitches, logs and planks. He has an astounding collection of burls, a solar kiln full of huge, wide roughsawn boards, a balcony groaning under the weight of milled stock. And just when you think you're starting to get a handle on his inventory, he drags you up the street to his "new" shop. The first thing to greet you there is the milled trunk of a 106-year-old Russian Olive (the small end of the butt log was 40" across), given to him by no less a personage than the former governor of Wyoming. In fact, over 80% of the material he uses is either recycled or salvaged.

Back in 1998, Mark Koons described his remote location for Woodworker's Journal...
" Here in Wyoming" he said, "we're so isolated it's kind of like being a woodworker on the moon. Materials are brought in on a shuttle and you go off to build in your own fantasy world."

We have watercolors, prints, paintings, tote bags and more! The gallery is open everyday from 11:00 till 5:00 during Frontier Days except Sunday. Artist's Statement
I enjoy re-creating landscapes with a particular emphasis on flowers because it is interesting to interpret Mother Nature. I try to capture the frailness of flowers and the strength of trees. The interdependence of nature reveals the oneness of all living things. I paint primarily in watercolor, and I utilize yupo paper in many of my paintings. As another medium, I also enjoy pastels and acrylic.

Beth Rulli "dumpster glass" artist supreme will be featured at Artful Hand Studio and Gallery at the corner of E 1st Avenue and House.The fun starts July 14th from 5 til 8 during the Art Design & Dine event. Fun, treats and engaging conversation for all!

Beth talks about her process:

"Flat glass, clear or colored, on its way to the landfill makes a side trip through my kilns where it metamorphoses into unique functional art, much like a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis.

After collecting glass from a variety of sources, including dumpsters, the glass is cleaned and cut to shape and size. I paint it with a variety of glass enamels and place it paint side up on molds in my kiln. The kiln gets hot enough for the glass to soften and slump, taking the shape of the mold as the enamels fuse into it. The edges of the glass begin to round and become “fire polished”. The next day I get to open the kiln and find out what happened—each load has an element of surprise. Sometimes there are chemical reactions in the paints and unexpected colors result, sometimes paints burn off and disappear, sometimes the glass moves in unexpected ways, sometimes the paints develop interesting craze lines. Each piece has its own distinct play of colors and one of a kind charm. As the paints are on the backside of the finished pieces, you are looking through the clear window glass on the inside of the pieces".

Linda Gregory lives and works in Cheyenne. She has explored many mediums in her artistic career which she discusses in her artists statement:

" I studied art at UC Berkeley. Discovering the medium that feels right for me is an ongoing journey that still evolves as I evolve. I am currently working with polymer clays which lend themselves to endless variations of texture and color. The impressions in the clay are made from lots of different sources, but not commercial stamps. Each piece has layers of paint, both matte and metallic, many of which I mix by hand (literally) on the actual piece".

Laurell Fogg loves the vastness, beauty and diversity of Wyoming, and portrays that in her art.
Laurell's grandparents established their homestead near LaGrange, Wyoming, and the heritage of the rural western lifestyle influences her art. She received her degrees in Art and Education at the University of Wyoming. Laurell is a retired teacher, having taught at Burns High and Carpenter Elementary, as well as at the Eastern campus of Laramie County Community College.
Laurell and her husband, Calvin, reside on their ranch east of Cheyenne, Wyoming. They raise Angus cattle, and also spend as much time as possible with their grandchildren.
Active involvement and interests in parades, rodeo, and all facets of ranching give her inspiration for her art, and Laurell hopes her artistic expressions will renew memories,or instill exploration of the Wyoming way of life.

Stories captivate me: they contain memories and experiences. Each of my coiled vessels contains a story, though it is not a literal telling. The large sides of leather I use for my vessels are marred by scars, causing me to consider the story behind each mark. They make me think of my own skin and my scars that hold stories. Through the materials, colors and shapes I use I aim to stir each viewer and evoke their own memories.

Dee James

The Cheyenne Artists Guild's first featured artists will be husband and wife team, Tony & Dee James. Dee,current Vice President of the Guild, paints in the modern contemporary style. Her paintings are a mix of both modernistic and abstract styling. Her choice of media are watercolor, acrylic and oil.

Tony James

Cheyenne photographer, and guild member Tony James will also have his work on display for May's tour. Tony is a native of Cheyenne, and his work reflects his love of the west. His photos include Wyoming landscapes, historical steam engines, and his latest interest in fine art prints. He also has several works on display at Lavender Essentials. Tony and Dee are both members of the Wyoming Business Council’s, Wyoming First Program and are listed with their company name of “Photo Image”.

The show this month at Clay Paper Scissors Gallery was done by Haitian artists in Port-au-Prince. The bright colors and busy scenes reflect the hustle and bustle of daily life in this poor caribbean nation. Market life is central to Haiti, and everyone has something to barter,

All money for works sold goes to financing “Camp Taptap”, a camp for approximately 200 orphaned children in the southern port of Les Cayes. The camp was modeled after Casper College’s KEY program( Knowledge Enrichment for Youth). In the summer of 2010, the first camp TAPTAP held two sessions, with 400 children participating. The second, in December 2010, offered a teacher training workshop in the early mornings, followed by a camp where children, mostly 5-10 years old, learned theater, music, writing, drawing, and watercolor.

Costs of running a camp include salaries for cooks ( who gather supplies, build fires, and cook lunch for 200+ people), stipend for counselors, who spend 24 hours a day with the children, supervising their bathing, sleeping, learning, and meal times, cost for food for three meals a day X 2 weeks X 200+ people, supplies for camp, medicines for sick kids at camp, transportation of cooks and other personnel to the camp site to and from the country. Paula Egan-Wright's goal for camp TAPTAP for the summer of 2011 is $6,000, She is also looking for an additional $2000 to provide supplies ( textbooks, software, computers) for the teacher training Institute. This month we have some very exciting things that we think will provide an evening you won't soon forget, including the Cheyenne International Film Festival program release reception and party, and new paintings from a wonderful new artist, Ringo Stavrowsky.

This Art, Design and Dine evening we will be hosting the 2nd Cheyenne international Film Festival's Program Release Reception. Be among the first to know what movies they will be screening at the Historic Atlas Theatre from May 19th to the 22nd. Join friends and make new acquaintances as you enjoy an evening of catered food sponsored by Suite 1901 and tickle your palette with a wine tasting sponsored by Table Mountain Wines or enjoy a choice of beers provided by and sponsored by Shadow's Restaurant. It promises to be a wonderful evening so be sure to bring your friends along as well.

We will also be showcasing the art of Elvira Stavrowsky, better known as "Ringo". Ringo Stavrowsky's art is best described as whimsical Western, a sort of Walt Disney approach to the West. It will bring a twinkle to your eye. Ringo, whose background is in interior design, was encouraged by her father in law, the famous artist Oleg Stavrowski, to paint the West as she saw it while growing up on the shores of the Black Sea in the Ukraine at Odessa.

"I remember seeing films and reading books about the West", she recalls. "I knew that I would find a way to get there. Even when there was almost no hope of getting out of the Soviet Union I felt this special place calling to me and I knew that I belonged there. I saw an overdubbed version of John Ford's "Stagecoach" and i was completely captivated by it. I kept going back again and again until my friends began calling me "Ringo". The name stuck and I did finally find my way to the wonderful Wild West. Originally my work was more traditional but as I gained competence I found myself longing to do something different. I began distorting and stylizing my work into something more interesting for me and into something that is much more of a personal expression of how I feel about the West."

Among Ringo's pieces that we will be displaying are "Two of a Kind" a 16X20 Acrylic on Canvas which portrays the humorous relationship between a cowboy and his horse. We will also have "War Party" and "The Archer" two 16X20 acrylic on canvas pieces and also "Hunters" a 24X35 acrylic which portray the American Indian in her singular way. We also have "Gaucho" an 11X14 acrylic on canvas done in Ringo's singular style.

Julie Karnos from Belfry, Montana will be at the shop with a trunk show and educational exhibit of her beautiful lampglass beads. Julie is a master glass artist. Many of you have admired her beads here in the shop and this will give you a chance to meet her in person and choose from her large inventory. The event will take place from 3-8pm. Anyone who attends the trunk show between these hours can put their name in for a drawing of a free bead by Julie! So stop by and say hi to Julie and enjoy some of the prettiest glass beads around.

Come and join us for our March Art, Design and Dine night at the Link Gallery at 124 West Lincolnway on Thursday March, 10th from 5PM to 8PM and enjoy the ambiance of our new location and browse the many beautiful paintings, sculptures, photographs, pottery and burled wood. We also have some 20 jewelry artists whose pieces are one of a kind, including turquoise, opals .

This month we are featuring the work of Amy Brackenbury who does beautiful florals and animals in oil as well as on particularly wonderful large piece which has a haunting moonlit sky viewed from within a forest.

Additionally, amongst other artwork, we have miniature paintings and American Indian beaded work, including a beaded saddle, rifle sheaf, moccasins, shin guards and vests. We also have hand carved powder horns, made from deer horns, and beautiful indian made jewelry as well. We also have the hand made paper art of Barbara Kuxhausen, which combines watercolor and found objects from the historical sites of the Wyoming pioneer days that her works portray.

Laramie County Library Hosts the 6th Grade Youth Art Show!

The exhibition at the Laramie County Library during March's Art, Design & Dine is the wonderful 6th Grade Art Show! Student art from the elementary schools in LCSD #1 is hanging on all three floors of the library and in the display cases in the library's entrance gallery as well as inside the library. Any artist living in Laramie County is eligible to enter. The $1,200 in cash prizes are given out in a Best of Show and first, second and third in seven categories. These prizes are given out during the opening reception Thursday March 10th 5 - 8 pm.

Artists interested in showing should pick up an application at Deselms Fine Art, 300 East 17th Street, Cheyenne. There is a fee of $10 per piece, up to five pieces per artist. The entry form and fees are due on or before Friday March 4th, delivery of artwork will be Monday March 7th.

Clay Paper Scissors Gallery is featuring an exciting new show this month called "Origins: Fifteen Years of Printmaking from Alumni of the University of Wyoming" It will run from Feb 1st to March 31st.

Nathan Abel, Michael Chavez, Katie Christensen, Rachael Eastman, Kazuko Goto, Sarah Hayman, Lisa Lofgren,Chancey Jahnig, Aaron Miller, Toni Mosley, Julia Goos Pence, Mark Ritchie, Sara Schleicher, Anna Tsantir, Kelly Valdez, Beth Wetzbarger, Michelle Winchell

All of the artists participating in Origins have at least one thing in common; they have all passed through the doors of the University of Wyoming in the past fifteen years under the direction of faculty member Mark Ritchie. The idea of the project came about, as many good things in the printmaking world do, over a few pints at printmaking conferences, with the final conversation taking place at the Mid-America Print Council conference in Fargo, North Dakota the fall of 2008.

Two years later the resulting portfolio and exhibition have already began to connect a number of Artist Printmakers who all have printmaking roots in Wainwright Bungalow number 1833 home of the print studio at the University.

As makers of multiples, printmakers have often created portfolio exchanges that allow all participants to share each other’s work. It is a lot like writing a note to someone, except in this case the 18 participants each have created an edition of 21 prints and each of them will receive a portfolio containing a print from all of the participants, the remaining three portfolios being for archiving and exhibiting.

As the prints came in it slowly became clear that many of the artists share more than just the print studio at the University of Wyoming. There are common themes present in some of the work, conversations between abstraction and object representation, even the sense of color and space used by each artist. So now the question arises if these similarities have roots from seeds planted in our print studio in Laramie or are they purely coincidental.
